Skin Needling

What is Skin Needling?

Skin Needling (also known as microneedling) is a minimally invasive anti-ageing treatment that safely generates a large number of microchannels that reach a defined depth into the skin. The microscopic puncture channels stimulate circulation and the growth of new collagen and elastin. This assists in re-building the skin’s structure and integrity, whilst providing versatile correction of many skin conditions. We have chosen to use a medical device called the MPen by Mesoestetic in the clinic due to its proven results. Not all devices are created equal, so it’s important that you have the awareness, that we are treating you with a results-based device.

During your treatment we infuse a sterile ampoule with potent active ingredients that are tailored to your concerns, and finish the treatment with a hydrating sheet mask. We use a topical anaesthetic prior to your treatment for patient comfort.

This treatment can be done on all parts of the body; some of the most common being face, neck and décolletage, hands & arms, stretch marks, and cellulite of the body, and also on the scalp for hair loss.

Results:

You will see an improvement in acne and stretch mark scarring, textural irregularities, reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and a decrease in pore size. You will also notice improved elasticity leaving a plumper, rejuvenated and youthful skin.

Expected Side Effects:

  • Sensitivity lasting up to 5 days.
  • Redness – similar to a mild sunburn which may involve slight swelling lasting up to 72 hours.
  • Freckles may temporarily lighten or permanently disappear in treated areas.
  • Slight dehydration of the skin which can last up to 5 days.

Potential Risks:

  • Permanent scarring (less than 1% – it is extremely rare).
  • Cold sores flare ups (take an antiviral 3 days prior and 3 days post if you are prone to cold sores).
  • Changes in skin colour – can cause treated skin to become darker or lighter than normal. Changes in skin colour are more common in people who have darker skin types and can be permanent. We do prescribe a Vitamin C and or brightening serum for 4 weeks pre-treatment for clients that are prone to pigmentation to avoid this.

Pre-Treatment Requirements:

DO

  • Prime the skin with Vitamin C & Vitamin A for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Research has shown the use of Vitamin C & Vitamin A prior to and throughout the treatment will maximise the results of this skin rejuvenation procedure. The treatment will be more effective, your healing time will be reduced, and the risk of complications will be lessened. For darker skin types you will be required to prep the skin for 4 weeks rather than 2 weeks.
  • Ensure you are applying a Broad-Spectrum SPF daily.

DO NOT

  • Schedule any important event until 1 week after the treatment.
  • Have sun exposure to the area being treated.

Post-Treatment Requirements:

For the first 72 hours following the treatment:

(After the 72 hours you can then go back to your normal skin routine, but listen to your skin)

DO

  • Treat the skin gently (stop using wash cloths and facial sponges as to not exfoliate the skin).
  • Use minimal makeup, and if required to wear it, we recommend mineral makeup. Check out our Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics range which is safe to use. You are more prone to infection in the first 24 hours post treatment.
  • Ensure you thoroughly sanitise all makeup brushes / sponges and change your pillowcase, so you are not at risk of infection and/or breakout.
  • Use these recommended treatment products only – Calmwise Cleanser, Hydr8 B5 Intense, Vitamin C (as required throughout the day), Ultimate Recovery Intense Moisturiser (as required throughout the day) & broad-spectrum SPF 50+. You can use your Vitamin A at night still but listen to your skin. If it’s too sensitive drop the Vitamin A for the 3 days post treatment.

DO NOT

  • Expose the skin to sun or tanning devices.
  • Perform excessive exercise, as this could cause more dehydration in the skin and cause infection.

For 2 weeks post treatment:

Avoid further clinical treatments (including but not limited to): microdermabrasion, laser, intense pulse light and or chemical peels.

10 minutes prior to treatment a topical anaesthetic is applied to the area. This will minimise any discomfort during the treatment. Most clients describe the feeling as a bit of pressure and a mild tingling feeling.

Not for the first 24 hours. After that we highly recommend Youngblood which is an Australian owned mineral makeup, safe to be used for the 48 hours post. These products are specifically designed for use post treatment and will even out the skin and provide protection, without causing a breakout. Please ensure you thoroughly sanitise all makeup brushes/ sponges before using them to apply any products after your treatment.

Treatments should be repeated every 1 – 4 weeks in a treatment course, depending on the individual skin concerns and the area of the body being treated.

Skin Needling is unsuitable for pregnant women.

If you struggle with hyperpigmentation, scarring, signs of ageing, volume loss, breakouts, enlarged pores and/or overall dull skin; then skin needling may be the ideal treatment for you. Book a consult with us anytime.

To allow for sufficient healing time, we recommend skin needling be performed at least one week before your event.
