What Are Dermal Filler Injections?

Dermal Fillers are cosmetic injections that enhance facial features with natural-looking and feeling results. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) dermal fillers are used to correct volume loss and reduce the appearance of fine lines. They create volume by drawing water into the treated area. As we age, we have loss of facial muscle, fat and tissue causing loss of volume. Dermal fillers help to restore this lost volume, redefining the natural curves of the face.

Common facial areas which are treated with dermal filler injections include the cheeks, lips, chin, jowls, jawline, temples and tear troughs as well as the neck, décolletage and hands. The procedure involves a small amount of the prescribed product being administered into the selected areas using a very fine needle, or in some instances, a cannula. The injections may sting for a few seconds, and in some instances a numbing agent will be used.

Prior to your first treatment, our Nurse Injector will consult with you to assess your suitability for dermal filler and discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

Results:

Dermal filler injections may be used in many areas of the face to fill and smooth lines, wrinkles, deep folds and to improve the appearance of scars.  They may also be used to restore and enhance the youthful curves of the face by adding volume to cheeks and lips and defining the natural contours of the jaw, chin and nose. Results are visible immediately, and optimal in one to two weeks. They last six to twelve months, depending on the area treated and the product prescribed. The dermal filler will gradually and naturally degrade in the body. Regular treatments will help to maintain results.

Minor

  • More significant bruising or swelling
  • Asymmetry due to filler placement
  • Filler product migration
  • Filler lumps

  • Delayed onset nodules
  • Persistent filler-related swelling
  • Allergic reaction to filler product

Major (Require a more complex medical treatment with risk of long-term consequences)

  • Granulomas (nodules encased in biofilm – more prevalent in immune-reactive patients) can present months to years post treatment

Emergency (Emergency protocol carried out)

Vascular occlusion resulting in transient, partial or complete loss of vision. This is a very rare complication. There have been approximately 100 cases

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Cardiac arrest

You’ll speak with our Nurse about your background and medical history at your initial consultation. A treatment plan will be devised, which sets out how we will use dermal fillers (possibly in conjunction with other techniques and tools) to create the results that you want.

At your dermal filler appointment:

  • The dermal filler product we use contains a local anaesthetic that makes the injection comfortable.
  • The area to be injected is marked out.
  • The dermal fillers are injected, and we apply cold packs immediately afterwards.
  • The procedure takes about 30-60 minutes in total, depending on the size of the area to be treated.

Yes. We use only products with proven safety record. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin, thus there is no risk of allergic reactions. Even people with food sensitivities can receive these fillers safely. The brands of dermal fillers we use are available in more than 90 countries and have been used as an injectable cosmetic treatment for more than two decades with an excellent safety record.

Longevity of the dermal fillers depends on factors such as:

  • Density of the filler
  • Injection area
  • Patient’s metabolism

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be quickly dissolved using an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This acts to disperse hyaluronic acid, speeding up the natural breakdown of the dermal filler. The use of hyaluronidase to remove fillers is off-license, so your practitioner will only go ahead if it is “in the best interest of the patient on the basis of available evidence”.
